How Great Leaders make Work Meaningful
A lot of genuinely well-meaning organizations struggle to balance the lofty corporate ambitions with the aspirations of individual contributors. A small task such as mopping floors or maintaining control circuits may be extremely important to the bigger picture, but seems remote from the higher organizational goals. Here the work of ex US President John F Kennedy comes out stirring as he helped create this organization-wide ethos at NASA that all were involved in the ultimate objective of putting a man on the moon. In this way, in one stroke a business leader can reduce the gap between corporate strategy and individual roles. Amazon aims to be the best place for customer strategy while INSEAD wants to reduce global poverty by increasing economic opportunities. To achieve either of the goals, the organizations must make the delivery personnel and the professors in the classroom respectively feel part of the bigger picture so they may contribute in their own way.
