When a Top Performer wants to Leave, should you try to Stop Them?
A lot of teams, especially their leaders face the unique situation of star performers wanting to leave. This gets particularly difficult when one has hit the right note and the team is performing, so a departure will create lines of tension across the team. The leader then faces the dilemma of whether to approach the departing employee with a counter offer, or just let it be. One key tenet of management training is to have open discussions. This tenet also stays true to this situation. Research has confirmed that on most occasions, it pays to understand the causes of one wanting to take up the competitor’s offer. Often it can be resolved, and if even if the departing team member does not take a U- turn, the conversation at least ends up generating the information on what can be still better.

Three Trends in China’s War for Talent
Some major trends have been identified as China grapples with its massive challenge in the field of talent recruitment. Local companies for a start are doing better in this battle compared to a lot of international star firms. A lot of people who have transitioned to a new job have joined so, from a traditional large firm. Among recruiters, it is leaders with vast international experience, who are much in demand. The business landscape in China is being shaped by the demands of the rising tech firms. This means the leaders are inevitably younger, and more likely to be based in Beijing, than any of the other major urban agglomerations. The traditional growth path is being modified to suit the present needs. As a result, a number of them are changing their jobs. Across industries, people with qualifications in the STEM fields are dominating. It is local leaders who are thriving in specialized positions.

How you can have more Impact as a People Analyst
For most of the last century or so of management education, talent management experts have advised objective distance. However, an increasing body of evidence suggests otherwise. Instead, an increasing bit of people analysis can only help. The right relationships need to be forged at each level. Only then will statistical interpretations be understood and appreciated. Instead of being an armchair leader, one ought to go to the field occasionally, and be one among the boys. Too much usage of technical language and terms will only befuddle those listening in. So, while business analytics needs to be sued, the purpose of the same has to be explained beforehand, to make it more effective. Some sort of control needs to be vested away at times. Oft ignored, human body language can have a major bearing on how leadership is viewed. One needs to start off with a humble gait.

Research: Better- managed Companies pay Employees more Equally
A study conducted recently confirmed that the best run of companies, tend to have a far more equitable pay structure in place. This keeps most happy, and is an effective strategy towards the right talent management. This is in stark contrast to the usual image of corporates where only those at the very top are rewarded with all the largesse. The existing conditions at the top places ensure improved efficiency. It also helps people be more focused on specific tasks, and avoid the compulsions of outsourcing. Instead, at such places outsourcing is done in specific functional areas such as cleaning, transport, security and catering. Such firms are also effective at setting goals, monitoring progress and developing their personnel.

How to Work for a Boss who has a new Idea every 5 Minutes
There are some bosses who come across as highly creative. They love bouncing off their ideas from those closest to them at work. Such bosses are usually highly productive when it comes to designing business innovations. But they can often get overbearing on their subordinates, who simply cannot keep up with the rush of ideas. A time management coach who has handled several such corporate training assignments, has some ideas to cope up with them. To start off, one has to foster mutual respect. One needs to understand that all ideas generated, do not necessarily lead to direct action. At times, it pays to simply hear off something, and let the idea mature on its own with the final verdict. Bosses too need to be honestly explained the time commitment needed for it all, so they may get more realistic with their ideation. The bosses will also need to be brought back down to earth sometimes, by focusing on the single plans. Constant new ideation leads to much distraction.

Competitive Advantage with a Human Dimension: From Lifelong Learning to Lifelong Employability
Due to the present trend of the constant churn in technology, employees worldwide have been sold the narrative of lifelong learning. Several management training sessions have also been held to hammer home the point. But now, a new trend of more far- reaching suitability has emerged. This is of lifelong employability. It has a greater human dimension to it. As part of this, training courses will need to be tailored to suit the inflection point in one’s career. Microlearning will also be part of it, involving fifteen to thirty- minute information bursts. The learning platforms will now make use of big data to glean insights about the requirements of individual learners. Competence is to be the buzzword, and not merely the degree od education. Greater investment is to be made on the training requirements of entry- level and frontline workers.

How Silent Meditation helped me Succeed at Work
A global marketing manager at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), saw a massive spurt in her work success after she started practicing the art of silent meditation. Indeed, all meditation tends to be silent, but she learnt Vipassana, one of the oldest of these styles in India. It focuses on seeing things as they are. One of its big advantages is its acceptance of the order of things as they are around. It also builds patience to respond proactively, but not merely react rashly. Decision- making not gets more decisive. The professional at the said business consulting giant also saw her communication now stand more effective than ever before. A sense of humility also got built in after the sessions she attended at Igatpuri, which is in Western India. One needs to begin slowly, by focusing on one’s breath.
