Hire Leaders for What they can do, not what they have Done
The Peter Principle was postulated about half a century back, but its postulates remain relevant even now. The principle states that employees keep getting promoted till a point where their skill sets are unable to cope up with the details. This happens because employees getting promoted on the basis of their existing profiles, not on the basis of their work being suited to the position up the chain. To solve this, the leadership team needs to introspect regarding some key questions. One of them is whether the said candidate has the leadership skills to be a top contributor at a higher position. While the person’s individual performance measures may stack up positively, his/ her other aspects’ performance may be lagging. So, the next question is whether the individual scores can be mapped towards a management position. The talent management team also has to look hard to understand whether the candidate- based decisions will take the company forward or back.

The Secrets of Successful Female Networkers
Among the many reasons cited for the dismally few numbers of women at the very top of the corporate ladder, one is their apparently relative lack of networking skills. This has also been explained by the fact that men traditionally dominating from the top, tend to mingle better with other men, thus creating such an unequal pipeline. Some women though, do end up establishing strong professional networks along the way. One prerequisite in doing so, is to be efficient at work. Another trait such women display is to be nimble and agile in their working styles. Their networks are not only vast, but also sufficiently boundary spanning. As these women display good talent management skills, so their networks cover people from different companies, industries, levels and even demographics. They also display a balanced energy output.

Such tensions have recently surfaced in Ethiopia, Thailand, Canada, Mexico and in the USA. Once the other’s perspective is somewhat understood, those involve need to balance their drives towards power with some love. This will be a boon for companies’ talent management networks, while also boosting the collaboration drives.

You need to Practice being your Future Self
It is a common trend among professionals across sectors, to worry about their future selves. They often try to take out time to do things that will help them out in the long run. This is a good strategy, but even better will be if one starts practicing about one’s future self, in the present itself. This is because one practically inculcates the habits and traits that one goes through and practices during the existing time period. No amount of specific management training or coaching sessions can solve for this experiential learning. A lot of this was found out during the several case studies in which the firm- Bregman Partners- was involved in.

The Thrive Guide to Rediscovering your Purpose at Work
A few steps have emerged which would help professionals identify the ways to rediscover one’s purpose at the work place. One of them is to bring the whole self to work. There are no areas of one’s personality that need be hidden from view. The person must also get on with making a list of things he/ she enjoys. One’s personality gets reflected in his/ her likes and dislikes. Some may enjoy practicing their hobby at work, while others may be most engaged for the corporate training programme held. One must never work in isolation, but understand where he/ she fits in as part of the bigger picture. The contribution will then be more holistic.
